How semitone transposition works

A positive offset moves the tonic upward and a negative offset moves it downward. Twelve semitones make one octave, so moving by plus or minus 12 returns the same named key and mode. The calculator keeps major keys major and minor keys minor.

C Major + 2
D Major
A Minor + 3
C Minor
E Major − 1

A key calculation, not an audio editor

This page only calculates the theoretical destination key. It does not pitch-shift, modify, upload or export a recording. If you do not know the source key, analyze the local file with Key Detector first.
