How to tap a reliable tempo
The calculator measures the time between taps. BPM equals 60,000 divided by the average interval in milliseconds. A steady 500-millisecond interval therefore equals 120 BPM.
- Listen for the pulse you would naturally count or dance to.
- Tap the button, screen or Space key at least twice.
- Keep tapping for several beats until the number settles.
- Use Reset to start over, or pause for 2.5 seconds.
The calculator keeps up to eight recent intervals and filters a large timing outlier once enough taps are available. It does not listen through your microphone.
Tap Tempo or automatic BPM detection?
Tap Tempo is useful when you can hear the beat but do not have an audio file, or when an automatic result follows the wrong rhythmic layer. Use the BPM Finder when you want the browser to analyze a local recording and return exact, half-time and double-time values.
Count the musical pulse you need
A track can feel correct at more than one tempo level. For example, a half-time groove may be counted near 70 BPM or 140 BPM. Tap the level that matches your practical use rather than treating either number as universally correct.
